KENT- Former Kent State left hander Joe Whitman has been named a finalist for College Male Athlete of the Year for the 2024 Greater Cleveland Sports Awards.
Whitman went 9-2 for the Golden Flashes last year, including going undefeated in regular season MAC play. He became the 14th Golden Flash to earn Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Year honors.
In 15 starts, Whitman tossed 81 innings for the Flashes, allowing only 63 hits and 29 walks while striking out 100. He became the first Collegiate Baseball First-Team All-American for the Flashes since Joey Murray in 2018. He also earned second-team All-America honors from the National College Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA), the American College Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Perfect Game.
The San Francisco Giants selected Whitman in the second round with the 69th pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball draft. In the Rookie League and Class-A San Jose, Whitman went 1-0 with a 1.86 earned run average, striking out 13 in 9.2 professional innings.
Fans can vote for Whitman through the Greater Cleveland Sports Award website. Voting accounts for 50 percent of the results and voting closes Monday, January 15th at 5 p.m. The Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23rd at Rocket Mortgage Field House.
