CHAMPAIGN, Ill. – The No. 21-rankedIllinois women's gymnastics teamwill be hosting itsfirst home meet of the season in quad-meet form when they take on West Virginia, Western Michigan and UW-Oshkosh on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 2:30 p.m. CT.
Full Circle
Head coach Nadalie Walsh will be facing her alma mater, UW-Oshkosh, for the first time in her career. Walsh also started her career with the Titans from 2001-03 as an assistant coach and helped the Titans to a second-place finish at nationals in 2001. She went on to become the head coach where she was named the NCGA Coach of the Year in 2006 and also earned Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Coach of the Year accolades in 2005 and 2006, as well as Division III West Regional Coach of the Year honors in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
History
While this is the Illini's first meeting with West Virginia and UW-Oshkosh, Illinois holds a 3-0 record over Western Michigan (196.425-193.925 in 2011, 195.400-194.025 in 2012 and 196.225-195.500 in 2020).
Came Home to Shine
Freshman Destiny Denning made her college debut in her hometown of Las Vegas at the Mean Girls Super 16 Gymnastics Championships.
Denning not only scored a 9.875, but she also placed third in the first session of the meet.
Ranked Illini
After scoring a 195.825 at the Super 16, Illinois is now ranked No. 21 in the country, moving five spots from where they were in the preseason poll.
Mia Takekawa also earned a ranking of No. 10 after scoring a 9.900 on beam in Las Vegas.
