💡 When granularity provides clarity...This infographic👇 shows how many grams of CO2e is emitted per passenger, per kilometre on different modes of transport. Why is this helpful?Apart from clearly showing which are the most and least carbon intensive modes, it demonstrates that short-haul flights are more carbon intensive than medium or longer haul. Why? Because take off and landing uses more fuel than cruising at altitude.Knowledge is power meaning travel companies (and individuals) can adapt their travel strategy accordingly.Encouraging customers to take longer long haul trips (say 3 weeks long) could be a better strategy than encouraging them to take multiple short break or week-long short haul trips.🙏 Thanks to Sarah Daly for the share.

#experiencematters #shippingindustry The current global traffic now will be rerouted around Cape of Good Hope due to the current situation of Res Sea and Suez Canal, adding 40% to voyage distance (and even more to cost). These factors probably will play a major role increasing the shipping cost in 2024.Brace yourselves for a potential increase in shipping costs in 2024. Due to the current situation of the Red Sea and Suez Canal, global traffic will now be rerouted around the Cape of Good Hope, adding 40% to voyage distance and even more to cost. Stay informed and prepared for the impact this may have on your industry.

Love this data from ecollective and Sarah Daly to help further business strategy and, specifically, product development choices. It also helps validate the approach we've folllowed at for some time in respect of advocating and promoting trips of longer duration for overseas visitors. Long haul international markets are hugely important to Scotland, Ireland and England and we've explored every inch of the paradox for a business which is committed to taking significant and measurable climate action. Part of this exploration even included an unlikely debate with Extinction Rebellion about whether air travel was ever justified. When I explained that when done right, tourism can be the catalyst for so many positive outcomes from poverty reduction to environmental conservation I was surprised to hear they actually agreed with my point. In summary, fly less, stay longer and when you do travel, go with purpose and meaning. #tourism #adventuretourism #sustainability #climateaction #carbon #indatawetrust

TiEnergy's latest blog post highlights the trends in railroad sustainability:https://lnkd.in/ggGfz5bgRail travel is already a sustainable option for freight shipping and passenger travel, emitting lower CO2 than air, car, or long-haul truck transportation. According to McKinsey, rail travel contributes less than one percent of global carbon emissions. However, there is a growing focus on Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG) aspects of rail operations. Carbon emissions are just one piece of the puzzle. Check out TiEnergy's blog for additional trends impacting railroad sustainability. #railroadsustainability #sustainabilitytrends #ESG

Some more reflections on the Future of Rail conference. We argue that reducing emissions is a key reason to invest in passenger rail. But for rail to be successful there needs to be many other changes. Including reducing our bias towards cars.https://lnkd.in/gPzuDKnF

🚆 Switching Domestic Flights to Rail: A Sustainable Move 🌿💨According to Mabrian Technologies Official, Europe could cut one million tonnes of CO2 emissions yearly by replacing domestic flights with rail journeys. There are 554 short-haul airline routes in Europe, carrying 44 million passengers and emitting 2.3 million tonnes of CO2 annually. Transitioning this traffic to rail could reduce emissions by 48%. While challenges exist, exploring greener travel options is vital for a sustainable future. 🚄🌏#Sustainability #RailTravel #GreenTransportation #CarbonReduction #EcoFriendlyEuropehttps://lnkd.in/df5FwbpD

An informative tool for anyone interested in calculating their carbon footprint per flight leg. In my opinion, awareness of an individual's carbon emissions during air travel will impact the kind of service an individual chooses. #sustainability #airlines #airtravel

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗿𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗲, 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀 The increasing importance of the Northern Sea Route (NSR), also known as the Arctic Route, which traverses the Arctic Ocean along the northern coast of Russia, is at the center of a debate about the future of commercial routes. This debate is fueled by the difficulties caused by the Middle Eastern crisis, which are making navigation in the Red Sea and passage through the Suez Canal increasingly problematic. Hence, the analysis of possible alternatives to avoid redirecting a significant portion of commercial traffic towards the Cape of Good Hope, with heavy burdens in terms of costs and transit times. The Arctic Route could provide shorter routes between Europe and Asia compared to the traditional Suez and Panama Canals, resulting in fuel savings, cost reductions, and CO2 emissions. However, there are still several questions to be addressed. While climate change is increasing the navigability of this route, freeing it from ice for longer periods, navigation remains limited to a few months each year. Moreover, extreme conditions and the need for specialized equipment raise concerns about safety and environmental risks that must be carefully evaluated to ensure safe and efficient transit. 🌊❄️The economic and environmental benefits of navigation through the Arctic Route are significant. The reduction in operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions provides companies with an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. Additionally, the route is less congested, reducing the risks of maritime accidents. The increased accessibility of the route could therefore revolutionize freight logistics, allowing for faster shipments and improving supply chain efficiency. According to a study by Brown University published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Arctic routes are 30% to 50% shorter than Suez and Panama Canal routes, with transit times reduced by approximately 14-20 days and a 24% reduction in ship greenhouse gas emissions. 🚢📉#ArcticRoute #Shipping #Sustainability #ClimateChange
